Our Home

Since our kids were small, we have had many different pets in our home. If you are trying to decide which family pet to choose, you will enjoy reading the following tips from our experiences in pet ownership that may help you figure out which one might be best for you.
When I married my husband, he owned an African Grey Parrot. It was so much fun to hear her talk and mimic all of the different sounds in our home. This beautiful bird is certainly endearing to its owners. She had her own personality and was fun to interact with. Sadly, we ended up having to sell her because we moved into a small apartment and had a new baby. The noise was just too much for our neighbors and the baby. Now that the baby is a teenager, we are used to noise and have our own home. Therefore, buying another African Grey Parrot is high on our list. We would advise purchasing a hand fed and raised parrot from a reputable breeder because they will be calmer and easier to work with for your family. Be prepared to clean often, because they can get messy. They need a large cage, plenty of toys, and your devotion to keep their large beaks entertained.
When I taught first grade, I purchased two rats for our classroom. I advise having two, because they are social critters and it is easier. Because of their tails, they were able to balance and stayed secure on the shoulders of all my six year olds. I always worried about hamsters or guinea pigs getting dropped. Rats bond to their owners and can be taught simple tricks. They are nocturnal, but did very well during our busy days at school. It was fun for the children to learn to care for them and to tell people that they had a pet rat.
We currently own a dog. She is a Miniature Schnauzer. We love how she talks to us and is so smart. As with all dogs, you need to invest your time and attention in order to get them trained and well behaved. We would advise waiting until your children are at least six, seven, or even eight years old before getting a dog. We adopted a few different dogs when the kids were little, and they never worked out. We found good homes for them, but wished we had waited. There is so much work involved in caring for small children and babies, that it was hard to find the time to train the dog. There were also issues of nipping because little ones could not always control the urge to grab them, even though they were taught to be gentle. Now that the kids are older, having a dog as their best friend and to experience that unconditional love is simply perfect.
As a little girl growing up in a small farming town, we had a pet skunk, horses, rabbits, cats, and dogs. I loved them all and enjoyed caring for them. It taught me responsibility and love for animals. I enjoyed participating in 4-H with my animals, and always wanted the same for my children. Even though the kids begged for some kind of pet since they were little, we had to be careful in our choices because of their age. It seemed like mom was the one who always ended up feeding and training. Be observant of costs, because pets can be expensive. Make sure you have the time to care for the pet you choose. Make sure they are the right fit for you and your family, and then you will be able to enjoy years of wonderful, cuddly companionship.

We are filing chapter 13 bankruptcy and do not wish to keep our home. How can we do this successfully?
Please give suggestions on allowing our home to go through foreclosure or other means during our Chapter 13 process. It has become very apparent that we are unable to afford it and is part of our total money outlay problem. Not sure we can sell this property and get out from underneath the total payoff amount.
Also, what would happen if we sold the home for less than the payoff? Is foreclosue an option. Sounds painful. Need and appreciate all help with this situation.
Talk to a bankruptcy attorney. Attorneys will give you a free consultation, and one who specializes in bankruptcy will be able to give you a realistic picture. They can also tell you how much it will cost if you hire an attorney to represent you for the bankruptcy, and advise you whether you should proceed with foreclosure or not.
Do NOT answer solicitations from those 'foreclosure assistance' people - most of them are rip-off artists. Do not sign your home over to someone else who claims they can help you get out of debt or keep your home.
If you choose to give up your house to foreclosure, you'll be sacrificing all of the equity you have in it. That may be greater than the cost of forbearance. If you file Chapt. 11, you can stop the foreclosure until you get back on your feet, and make a promise to sell the home. At that point, the sale proceeds will go toward paying off your mortgage lender(s).
